Numeracy has been identified as a key priority at Albanvale Primary School. To be numerate is to have and to be able to use appropriate mathematical knowledge, understanding skills, intuition and experience whenever they are needed in everyday life. Each child should be able to think and solve problems mathematically by using the appropriate skills, concepts and knowledge. They should be provided with rich and enjoyable experiences related both to their individual needs and to the wider requirements of society.
Numeracy is fundamental to students at all stages of their schooling and in all areas of the curriculum.
All teachers share the responsibilities to help students become numerate. It is intended that all students at Albanvale will have access to mathematics and numeracy programs that will enable them to continue to further develop their skills in practical situations. We aim for each child to:
Develop a positive attitude towards mathematics
Develop self-confidence in their ability to deal with mathematics
Develop an increased understanding of basic mathematical concepts and practical ability in the areas of number, measurement, data, chance, space, and thinking and reasoning strategies
Develop an ability to share and reflect upon mathematical concepts and thinking strategies employed by others
Be able to apply previously acquired concepts, skills, knowledge and understanding to new situations both in and out of school
Encourage the use of mental calculations and efficient strategies to work out the answers
Build a home/ school partnership in their mathematical learning
Students at Albanvale Primary School enjoy a one our concept based numeracy lesson aligned to the whole-school annual curriculum overview. Teachers work in grade level Professional Learning Teams that analyse student data to inform the development learning experiences at students point of need. Lessons are structured using the whole-school instructional model in Mathematics which maximises students learning through the effective use of evidence-based, high impact teaching strategies. This includes each student being supported in a small, explicit teaching group multiple times per week.
At the beginning of each unit, each student conferences with their teacher and develops a Number goal connected to the school's essential learnings and discuss strategies and supports. Students share their progress and attainment of their goals with their peers, family and teachers through the Seesaw platform.
In addition, Albanvale Primary School engages students in a skills-based Maths in Action initiative which provides students 30 minutes a day of guided instruction in developing students mathematical proficiencies including problem-solving and mental computation.

To retrieve your child's Mathletics login please contact your child's classroom teacher. Another strategy could be to access the Seesaw platform and keep up to date with your child's current goal in number. They will explain strategies they have agreed on with their teacher, many of which can be practised at home.
